Cheap Minecraft hosting: what actually matters when you compare
Search for "cheap minecraft hosting" and you get a list of prices from a couple of euros a month. Those numbers say very little on their own. A €2 server that lags with five players online is more expensive than a €4 server that simply works, because you end up buying it twice. Cheap is only cheap if each euro buys you enough memory, a fast processor and the basic things you need to not lose a world. This article walks through the seven points on which hosting plans really differ, so you can judge an offer on value instead of on the price tag.
1. Count in euros per gigabyte of RAM, not per month
RAM is the first limit of a Minecraft server. Vanilla with a handful of friends runs on 2 to 3 GB, a Paper server with twenty plugins wants 4 to 6 GB, and modpacks like All the Mods or RLCraft only run comfortably from 8 GB. So divide the monthly price by the number of gigabytes. A €5 plan with 2 GB costs €2.50 per gigabyte; an €8.80 plan with 8 GB costs €1.10 per gigabyte and is cheaper the moment you have more than a few players. At MC-Node we deliberately charge a flat €1.10 per GB, so you know exactly what scaling up costs.
Also check what a provider means by "RAM". Some plans advertise memory that is shared between several customers (overselling). Your server may be assigned 4 GB while the physical machine cannot deliver that at busy times. Ask, or look for words like "burst" or "up to" in the terms.
2. The CPU sets your TPS, and TPS is what players feel
Minecraft processes the world largely on one processor core. Twenty ticks per second is the norm; when TPS drops below that, mobs stutter, redstone clocks fall behind and blocks are placed late. More RAM does not fix that; a faster core does. So check which processor sits under a plan. A modern AMD Ryzen or EPYC with a high clock speed (4 GHz or more) does more per tick than an older Xeon from a data centre clearance, even if the latter has more cores on paper.
A provider that does not name the CPU usually has a reason. 3. Backups: are they on, and can you restore them yourself?
The most expensive day for a server owner is the day the world corrupts without a backup. Some cheap plans offer no backups, others make them but charge to restore, and others keep only one. What you want: automatic daily backups, several generations kept, and the ability to make and restore a backup from the panel yourself, without a ticket. Test that in the first week, before you truly depend on it. Our backup strategy describes a workable setup, even if your host does not do it for you.
4. DDoS protection is not a luxury for a public server
As soon as your server IP is on a server list or shared in a Discord, an attack from an angry player is a matter of time. Without protection your server is down for minutes to hours, and sometimes the provider's whole network with it. Good hosting includes always-on DDoS filtering at network level, not as a paid extra. Ask how the protection works and whether game traffic keeps flowing during an attack; some filters simply block everything, which gives the attacker what they wanted anyway.
5. Location and network: ping counts
A server on another continent is sometimes a euro cheaper, but your players feel the delay with every click. For players in Western Europe a data centre in the Netherlands with good routes to the large providers is the logical choice; for Germany and Poland the Netherlands is still close, with pings under 30 milliseconds. Also look at the uplink: 1 Gbit per node is the minimum, and a host that does not mention it often shares a smaller connection between dozens of servers.
6. The panel and the small things that cost time
With a good panel you do in a minute what otherwise costs a ticket: switch versions, install a modpack, connect a subdomain, open ports, edit files over SFTP. The panel we use (Pterodactyl, with our own additions) does all of that, and the knowledge base explains every step. With cheap plans watch for hidden limits: a player cap you cannot raise yourself, no access to server.properties, no custom plugins, or a "free subdomain" that only works with a paid SRV record. 7. Support: how fast, and by whom?
When your server will not start at 10 pm on a Saturday, you want someone who understands Minecraft and answers within the hour, not a chatbot that sends a link to a manual. Test support before you buy: ask a concrete technical question through the ticket system and see how long it takes and what comes back. A host that maintains a knowledge base of hundreds of articles usually also employs people who know what they are talking about.
What "cheap" then means in practice
An honest calculation for a small survival server with friends looks like this: 3 GB of RAM on fast hardware, daily backups, DDoS protection and a panel in which you can do everything yourself. With us that is a plan of around €3.30 a month, with the option to scale per gigabyte as your group grows. If you want to run a modpack, count on 8 GB and therefore about €8.80. That is not the lowest number you will find online, but it is the price of a server that keeps working. Common mistakes when choosing
The three mistakes we see most often in tickets. Buying too little RAM to save money: a server that stutters while loading chunks costs more players than a euro a month ever makes up; scale up as soon as TPS drops below 18. Paying a year up front for a discount with an unknown provider: test a month first, because a good server moves easily and a bad one does not. Forgetting the server location: a plan that is cheaper on paper but sits on another continent gives players 100 milliseconds of ping, and they notice every second. Choose hardware and location first, and the price only after that.
Checklist for comparing
- Price divided by GB of RAM, and is that memory guaranteed?
- Which CPU, and what is the clock speed per core?
- NVMe or SSD storage, and how many GB?
- Backups automatic, several generations, restorable by you?
- DDoS protection included and always active?
- Data centre close to your players, uplink at least 1 Gbit?
- Panel with version selector, modpack installer, SFTP and custom plugins?
- Support response time tested with a real question?
