DayZ Badlands lands 15 October: how to prep your server for Nasdara

On 15 October 2026, DayZ Badlands arrives: the biggest expansion since the 1.0 release. Not another seasonal update, but a paid expansion with a completely new map, Nasdara, 267 km² of desert. For players that is mostly exciting; for server admins it means homework. A new map touches your config, your loot economy, your mods and possibly your plan as well. In this post we line up what is already known and what you can start preparing right now.

Heads up: this article was written before release, based on what Bohemia Interactive has announced and shown so far. Details can still change before launch day; we will update this post as soon as Badlands is live.

What is DayZ Badlands?

Badlands is a paid expansion set in Nasdara, a fictional province with a Middle Eastern, post-conflict setting. Where Chernarus is all about abandoned Eastern Bloc villages and Livonia about forests and swamps, here you get an arid landscape with an atmosphere entirely of its own. And it is immediately the biggest official map DayZ has ever had:

MapAreaSetting
Livonia163 km²Forests, swamps, farmland
Chernarus+230 km²Post-Soviet coastal province
Nasdara (Badlands)267 km²Desert and dry highlands

Alongside the map itself, new weapons, clothing, items and new types of infected have been announced. The release date of 15 October was confirmed during gamescom 2026. An exact price has not been officially communicated at the time of writing.

Update 1.29 is the warm-up, 1.30 is the real hit

If you are already running a DayZ server, the first warning shot has landed: update 1.29 "Road to Badlands" has been on stable since 15 July 2026. That update brings a selection of Badlands material to the existing maps ahead of time, including the SCR-17 battle rifle, desert-camo gear, new infected variants and fresh military wrecks. Fun for your players, but for you as an admin mainly a dress rehearsal: new classnames turning up in your economy, mods that needed an update.

The expansion itself lands together with update 1.30. And that is where the real hit comes: big engine and content updates are traditionally the moment mods break and servers spend a while in pieces. More on that below.

How to prepare your server

1. The map choice lives in your mission file

DayZ decides which map your server runs through the template line in serverDZ.cfg. Chernarus is dayzOffline.chernarusplus, Livonia is dayzOffline.enoch. Nasdara will get its own mission name once Bohemia releases the server files; what exactly it will be called is not known yet. In practice that means switching maps will be a matter of picking a different mission, not building a new server. We have covered that basic configuration in detail before in our post on setting up your DayZ server, and that story still holds for Nasdara.

2. Your loot economy does not come along

This is the important one to grasp: the loot economy is arranged per map. Every mission has its own types.xml, cfgspawnabletypes.xml and event files. So all those hours you put into tuning your Chernarus economy do not automatically make the crossing to Nasdara. You start there with the new map's default files and rebuild your changes from scratch, including the new Badlands items that show up as extra classnames. Annoying? A little. But also a chance to do it properly right from the start this time. Why that economy is so decisive for how your server plays is something we go into in our article on DayZ server hosting and the loot economy.

3. Mods: count on a few messy weeks

Broadly speaking there are two flavours. Item and gameplay mods (extra weapons, base building, UI tweaks) usually work independently of the map, but they do have to be compatible with update 1.30, and after every big update that simply takes mod authors time. Map-specific mods, such as custom spawn locations, custom builds or trader positions, are tied to a map by definition and quite simply do not exist for Nasdara on day one. If your server leans heavily on a big mod stack, do not assume you will switch over smoothly on 15 October. Test first, wait for updates to your most important mods and keep your community posted on your timeline.

4. Can your current plan handle it?

A map of 267 km² is not free in server terms. More surface area means more objects, more spawn points and a bigger central economy for the server to keep in memory, and that generally asks for more RAM than a smaller map. On top of that, a release like this pulls players in: where your server might run with ten people now, come October you may want to open up 30 or 40 slots. More slots means more memory and processing power again.

If you run with MC-Node, that is fortunately not a big project. The DayZ plans start from €3,00 per month, you can upgrade at any moment through your client area and everything is cancellable monthly. So you can comfortably size up a step before October, see how Nasdara behaves and adjust afterwards. Fair is fair, though: if you run a private little server with a handful of friends, there is a real chance your current plan handles it just fine. Simply measure it: if your memory usage keeps pushing against the ceiling after the switch, you know enough.

5. Keep in mind that your players need the expansion

Badlands is a paid expansion, and if it goes the way Livonia and Frostline did, players will need the DLC to play on a Nasdara server. So sound out your community before you turn your main server upside down: an empty desert is even emptier than an empty Chernarus. For many servers the safest route is a second server on Nasdara alongside the existing one, rather than a hard switch.

Honestly: what we do not know yet

Six weeks before release there are still loose ends. The exact mission name and server files are not available yet, the system requirements of the new map have not been officially confirmed, and neither has the price of the expansion. Nor does anyone know in advance how quickly the big mods will be 1.30-compatible. So treat everything above as preparation, not as a plan set in concrete. What you can do today: document your current economy tweaks properly, clean up your mod stack and start thinking about slots and memory. Then on 15 October you will be the one who is live within an evening, while the rest are still figuring it out.
