Changing 7 Days to Die server settings via the panel

🎮 Other games · Updated 18/08/2026

The default settings of 7 Days to Die are fine to start with, but the real fun begins when you make the server your own: a custom server name, a password for your group of friends, a different difficulty level or customised horde nights. In this article you'll learn how to adjust the configuration of your MC-Node server via the Pterodactyl game panel.

Where do I find the settings?

The configuration of a 7 Days to Die server is stored in the file serverconfig.xml. You edit this file directly in the panel; no separate programs are needed.

  1. Log in at panel.mc-node.net.
  2. Open your 7 Days to Die server and go to the Files tab.
  3. Find the file serverconfig.xml and click it to open it in the editor.

Adjusting settings

Each setting in serverconfig.xml is a line with a name (property name) and a value (value). You only change the value; leave the rest of the line untouched. Some commonly used settings:

  • ServerName — the name of your server as players see it.
  • ServerPassword — set a password to keep the server private for your group.
  • ServerMaxPlayerCount — the maximum number of players that can join at the same time.
  • GameDifficulty — the difficulty level of the game.
  • BloodMoonFrequency — how many days pass between horde nights; every seven days by default.
  • DayNightLength — the length of an in-game day in real minutes.

Tip: change a few settings at a time and test in between, so that if something goes wrong you immediately know which change caused the problem.

Step-by-step: applying changes

  1. Stop your server via the Console tab using the Stop button. This prevents your changes from being overwritten on shutdown.
  2. Open serverconfig.xml via Files and adjust the values you want.
  3. Click Save Content to save the file.
  4. Start the server again with Start and check in the console that it boots without errors.
  5. Connect to the server and verify that your changes are active, for example the new server name or the password.

Things to watch out for

  • Do not delete any lines and make sure the XML structure stays intact; a typo can prevent the server from starting.
  • If something goes wrong, simply restart the server after reverting the change.
  • Some changes, such as world settings, only fully apply to a newly generated world.
