Cheap VPS hosting: what do you get for your money?

A VPS (virtual private server) is your own slice of a server, and you're root on it. You install your own software, open the ports you need and keep your project running day and night, without leaving your PC on at home. You can read exactly what a VPS is and when you need one in What is a VPS?

For $2.16 per month, the Budget VPS gives you 2 vCores, 1 GB of DDR4 memory and 10 GB of NVMe storage, with DDoS protection and your own IPv4 address. That's enough for a Discord bot, a few scripts or a small website. Need more? The line goes up to 8 vCores and 32 GB of memory. You pay per month with no contract and can cancel monthly.

Cheap doesn't mean we cut corners on the basics: every Budget VPS runs on our own servers with an Intel Xeon E5-2699 v3, DDR4 memory and NVMe storage, in the Previder PDC2 data centre in Hengelo. You do manage the software yourself and take care of your own backups. If your project grows, you can upgrade to a larger plan within the Budget line through the client panel.

Linux VPS on OpenVZ: what you can and can't do

The Budget VPS runs on OpenVZ. That's container-based virtualisation: your VPS shares the server's Linux kernel, but has its own file system, its own processes, its own users and its own IP address. Because there's no complete virtual machine running for each customer, less computing power is lost. That's how we keep the price of this cheap Linux VPS so low.

You install Ubuntu from the SolusVM panel and log in via SSH. Then you set up whatever you need yourself: a web server with PHP and MySQL, Node.js or Python for your bot, or Java for a light game server. To find out how to connect, read How do I connect to my VPS through SSH?

Windows, a custom kernel or kernel modules aren't possible on OpenVZ. For those you need a full virtual machine, like the Normal VPS on KVM. Switching to another line means a new VPS; you move your data over yourself.

Supported

  • Ubuntu with full root access
  • Web servers, databases and scripts
  • Discord bots, APIs and cron jobs
  • Up to 5 IPv4 addresses, $2.16 per month per extra address

Not supported

  • Windows Server
  • A custom kernel or kernel modules
  • Installing your own ISO

Our own hardware and our own network in Hengelo

Your Budget VPS doesn't run on rented cloud capacity, but on our own servers in the Previder PDC2 data centre in Hengelo. The network is our own (AS211750) and all traffic comes in through PletX, which filters out DDoS attacks upstream before they reach your VPS.

Because your VPS is located in the Netherlands, you're close to your server if you're in the Netherlands or Belgium. Your own ping to Hengelo is shown at the top of this page; the current status of our network and nodes is on status.mc-node.net.

Questions about cheap VPS hosting

How much does a cheap VPS cost at MC-Node?

The Budget VPS is our cheapest VPS: from $2.16 per month, including VAT. For that you get 2 vCores, 1 GB of memory and 10 GB of NVMe storage. There are 11 plans, up to 8 vCores and 32 GB of memory. You pay per month and can cancel monthly.

What is a VPS?

A VPS is a virtual server: an isolated part of a physical server with its own memory, storage and IP address, where you have root access. You can install anything that runs on Linux. Read more in What is a VPS?

Can I run Windows on a Budget VPS?

No. The Budget VPS runs on OpenVZ and only supports Linux (Ubuntu). For Windows Server, choose a Windows VPS (Normal VPS) from $3.67, or a Premium VPS.

What's the difference between OpenVZ and KVM?

With OpenVZ, your VPS shares the host's Linux kernel. That's efficient and therefore cheap, but you can't run a different operating system or your own kernel. KVM gives you a full virtual machine with its own kernel, so Windows and every Linux distribution work too.

Is the VPS managed or unmanaged?

Unmanaged: you get root access and manage the software on your VPS yourself. We take care of the hardware, the network and the DDoS protection. If you get stuck, you can reach us via the chat, a ticket or Discord.

Do I get my own IPv4 address?

Yes, your Budget VPS comes with one IPv4 address. You can add more when you order, up to 5 addresses in total, for $2.16 per month per extra address.

Is there a data limit?

Your plan has no fixed data limit in terabytes: traffic falls under fair use. Each VPS has a guaranteed 1 Gbit/s. If you expect a very large amount of traffic on a regular basis, please check with us first.

Where is my VPS located?

In the Previder PDC2 data centre in Hengelo, on our own hardware and our own network (AS211750). All our VPSes are located there, so if you're in the Netherlands or Belgium, you're close to your server.

How quickly will my VPS be ready?

Your VPS is created automatically right after payment. You receive your login details by email and manage the VPS in the SolusVM panel.

How fast is the network?

1–20 Gbit/s* per node. DDoS protection comes standard on every VPS.* Fair use · 1 Gbit/s guaranteed per VPS · uplink varies per node

Can I upgrade later?

Yes. Within the Budget line, you can upgrade to a larger plan through the client panel, and the price difference is settled. Switching to the Normal VPS or Premium VPS means a new VPS, because those run on a different type of virtualisation (KVM). You move your data over yourself.

Are backups included?

No. On the Budget line you take care of backups yourself, for example with your own script to external storage. With the Normal VPS and the Premium VPS you can add Premium Backups for $16.20 per month.

What's the difference between a VPS and web hosting?

With web hosting you share a managed server and get a panel for websites and email. With a VPS you get your own server with root access and install everything yourself. For just a website, web hosting is often easier; see also Web hosting or VPS?
