How much memory does your Minecraft server need?
Memory is the first thing to get tight with Minecraft, but more isn't always better. These are the minimums our AI advisor uses as well. Plan for your busiest evening, not a quiet weekday afternoon.
On a VPS, keep about 1 GB free for the operating system: on a 4 GB VPS you give Java 3 GB. More memory won't fix lag that comes from one overloaded core. Minecraft updates each world on a single main thread, and that's where per-core speed counts.

Minecraft VPS or Minecraft hosting?
On a VPS you're in charge of everything: Java, the server software, updates and the firewall. That gives you freedom, but it also takes time. With our ready-made Minecraft servers we take care of that part: you choose a plan and your server is ready to go with its own panel.
Not sure? Read VPS or game server: what do you actually need?
Choose a Minecraft VPS if you
- want to run multiple servers behind a proxy
- want to manage Java settings, plugins and scripts yourself
- want to run a bot, website or database alongside Minecraft
- want to learn how a server works under the hood
Choose a ready-made server if you
- mainly want to play and not manage anything
- want a panel with a console and file manager
- would rather not work with SSH and Linux
How to set up Minecraft on your VPS
Three steps from an empty VPS to a server your friends can join. The full guide with all the commands is on our blog.
-
Log in and prepare
Your VPS is created automatically after payment. Install Ubuntu on it from the VirtFusion panel, log in via SSH and create a separate user for your server. In the firewall, only open SSH and port 25565 (TCP).
-
Install Java and the server
Minecraft 26.1 and newer requires Java 25; for 1.20.5 up to and including 1.21 it's Java 21. Then set up Paper, Purpur or your modpack's server version and accept the EULA.
-
Start automatically
Create a systemd service, so your server starts by itself after a reboot and saves the world first when it stops. Prefer a web panel with a console and file manager? Then install the free Pterodactyl panel.
Java and Bedrock on one server
Java Edition is played on PC; it's the edition for mods and large plugin servers. Bedrock runs on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, phones and tablets. Each edition has its own network protocol, so they don't play together out of the box.
With the Geyser plugin, Bedrock players can still join your Java server, and with Floodgate added they don't need a Java account to do so. In that case, also open port 19132 (UDP). If everyone plays Bedrock, you can also run Mojang's Bedrock Dedicated Server on your VPS.

DDoS protection and ping
Minecraft servers are a popular target for DDoS attacks. That's why all traffic to your VPS comes in via PletX, which filters out attacks upstream before they reach our network. It's always on and costs nothing extra.
Your VPS is in Hengelo, so from the Netherlands and Belgium you're close to your server. You can measure your own ping at the top of this page. Also read How does the DDoS protection work? and Server location and ping.

Other VPS lines
For a light server with a few friends, a Windows or Linux VPS on AMD EPYC works too, and for a bot on the side a cheap VPS is enough. Want cores that are yours alone? Take a look at a VDS with dedicated cores.
Questions about the Minecraft VPS
How much does a Minecraft VPS cost?
A Minecraft VPS with 4 GB of DDR5 costs $8.96 a month. With 8 GB you pay $16.52, and with 12 GB, enough for a large modpack, . Prices include VAT and you can cancel monthly.
How much RAM do I need for a Minecraft server?
At least 4 GB for vanilla or Paper, 8 GB with mods and 12 GB for large modpacks such as All the Mods. On top of that, keep about 1 GB free for the operating system. Running multiple servers? Then add up the memory.
Why a Ryzen 9 for Minecraft?
Minecraft updates each world on a single main thread. The speed of that one core determines how many players, entities and how much redstone your server can handle. The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X* reaches a single-core boost of up to 5.7 GHz; that makes it the fastest processor in our VPS lines.* or AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, depending on the node
Can I run modpacks like All the Mods?
Yes. You install the modpack's server version yourself, with the Java version that goes with it. For large modpacks, start with at least 12 GB of memory. How to go about it is explained in Installing a modpack on your server.
Can Bedrock players join my server?
Yes. With Geyser on your Java server, Bedrock players can join in, and with Floodgate they don't need a Java account. In that case, also open port 19132 (UDP). If everyone plays Bedrock, you can also run Mojang's Bedrock Dedicated Server.
How is this different from Minecraft hosting?
With a Minecraft VPS you manage everything yourself, from Java to the firewall. With our ready-made Minecraft servers we set the server up for you with its own panel. If you mainly want to play, that's easier; if you want full control or multiple servers, a VPS is the better fit.
Do I get a panel for my Minecraft server?
You manage your VPS in the VirtFusion panel: start, stop, reinstall and a console. Minecraft itself you manage via SSH, or you install the free game panel Pterodactyl. With it you manage your servers in the browser, with a console and file manager. See How do I install Pterodactyl?
