What is a VPS?

A VPS (virtual private server) is your own virtual server on a physical machine that you share with other customers. You get the memory, storage and vCores of your plan, and you are the administrator: you choose the operating system, install your own software and decide which ports are open.

That puts a VPS somewhere between web hosting and a server of your own. With web hosting, the host takes care of the software and you get a panel for websites and email. With a dedicated server you rent the whole machine. A VPS gives you the freedom of your own server, without paying for the entire machine.

VPS hosting: what should you look for?

Six things that make the difference between a VPS that works well and one you cancel after a month.

Speed per core

A lot of software, like Minecraft and most game servers, mainly relies on a single core. In that case clock speed matters more than the number of vCores. That's why the Premium VPS and the VDS run on the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X*, with a single-core boost of up to 5.7 GHz. For websites and bots, the AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon is more than enough.

Enough memory

Memory is usually the first thing to run out. Always add some on top of your software for the operating system: Linux is lean, and for Windows Server we recommend at least 4 GB. Within your line you can upgrade later via the client panel; you only pay the difference.

NVMe storage

All lines run on NVMe drives. You notice it with databases, when loading large worlds and during updates. Besides speed, look at the amount of space too: log files and uploads grow faster than you think.

Network and DDoS protection

All traffic to your VPS comes in via PletX, which filters out DDoS attacks upstream. Each VPS gets a guaranteed 1 Gbit/s, and data traffic is subject to fair use, without a fixed limit in terabytes.

Windows or Linux

Linux is free and lightweight; most servers run on it. Windows Server is available on the Standard VPS, Premium VPS and VDS, but not on the Budget VPS. A licence is not included: without your own key, Windows runs as a 180-day evaluation version. Also read Windows VPS: licence, RDP and when Linux is the smarter choice.

Managing it yourself

Our VPSs are self-managed: you install updates, secure SSH and keep your software up to date. We take care of the hardware, the network and the DDoS protection. Stuck? We're happy to help via chat, a ticket or Discord.

Frequently asked questions about VPS hosting

How much does a VPS cost at MC-Node?

You can rent a VPS from €2 a month: that's the smallest Budget VPS. The Standard VPS starts at €3.40, the Premium VPS at €5 and a VDS at €28. All prices are per month and include VAT, and you can cancel monthly.

Which VPS do I need?

That depends on what you want to run. For bots, scripts and small sites, a cheap VPS is enough. If you want Windows, or an all-rounder for websites and FiveM, choose the Standard VPS. For game servers and modpacks the Premium VPS is the best fit, and if you want cores to yourself, go for a VDS. Above you'll find six examples with the amount of memory to start with.

Can I run Windows on a VPS?

Yes, on every line with KVM. With the Standard VPS and the VDS you choose Windows Server 2022 when you order; on the Premium VPS you install Windows via the VirtFusion panel. The Budget VPS runs on OpenVZ and supports Linux only. No Windows licence is included: without your own key, Windows Server runs as a 180-day evaluation version. Plan for at least 4 GB of memory.

Where is my VPS located?

In the Previder PDC2 data centre in Hengelo, on our own hardware and our own network (AS211750). All VPS lines you order here are hosted there.

Is the VPS managed or unmanaged?

Unmanaged, also known as self-managed: you get root or Administrator access and manage the software yourself. We take care of the hardware, the network and the DDoS protection. If you get stuck, you can reach us via chat, a ticket or Discord.

What is the difference between a VPS, a VDS and a dedicated server?

With a VPS you get your own memory, storage and vCores, but you share the processor with other VPSs on the same server. With a VDS the cores are reserved for you alone, which gives more consistent performance. With a dedicated server you rent the whole machine. Read more in VDS versus VPS.

How quickly is my VPS ready?

Your VPS is created automatically, right after payment. You'll receive your login details by email. You manage the Budget VPS in the SolusVM panel and the other lines in the VirtFusion panel.

Can I upgrade later?

Yes. Within your line you can upgrade to a larger plan via the client panel; you then pay the difference for the rest of your billing period. Want to switch to a different line? Then you order a new VPS and move your data over.

Rather have a whole machine?

Need more than a VPS can offer, or want the hardware all to yourself? Then take a look at our dedicated servers.
